Yesterday's weather was a spring melange: a mesclun mix of cold and warm, spring weather and winter. March came in like a lion as we recall, but will it be honorable and go out like a lion as it is supposed to? Time will tell. Today started out with temps in the mid-twenties, as of 8:30 it was up to 30!
Farmer girl planted onions yesterday morning, hoeing rows in a raised bed and setting small sweet onion plants in the rows. She did it early in the morning in the hopes that she might be able to have the work to herself: not so. Quite a number of cats came by; purring and curling around her hands, pouncing on them with their claws if she was not careful. One naughty hen who has been sleeping in the barn instead of the henhouse for any number of years now came querulously by, searching for bugs no doubt. Farmer girl chucked a few grubs at her, but the hen preferred her own fresh-dug ones and ignored them. The last straw was when the dog came, all forty pounds of her, and stood right smack on the raised bed, on top of all the little plants, feet planted and tail wagging, obviously quite pleased with herself and with farmer girl: so clever of her to be down on her hands and knees right where her face is most lickable..... swipe swipe.
Snow squalls roared down the valley several times; the temps yo-yoing, dropping ten degrees with each one and recovering afterward. Farmer girl wished she had chosen another day for cleaning garden in preparation for spring planting! She thought back to February's zero-degree weather and wondered why she thinks its cold at forty degrees?
