Life on the farm has reached a slow boil. Temperatures hang around 90 during the day and cool only slightly during the night. In a way it is a welcome change from the cool dry weather we have had most of the spring! Farmer and Young Farmer work all day in the blazing sun, for it is hay-making time. They and the horses drink great amounts of water and eat sparingly, for it is too warm to eat.
The cows mind the heat a little, but not much. They make the most of their woods by lounging under the trees in the cool shade. Even the milking parlor is not bad, as all the winds that hit the farm pass right through, as farmer girl knows from past experience. She remembers the freezing winter winds and wonders how one could ever be so cold as to need coats and scarves... not that she wishes for winter, because summer has just come.... Thirsty and too warm for comfort, she tries to cool down by drinking ice-cold tank milk. At thirty-four degrees, it gives her brain freeze, but no lasting chill.
