Christmas Eve... what a beautiful day. One feels it would be a beautiful day even if the weather were stormy, with the snow and sleet we had earlier instead of this clear blue sky and soft winter sunshine. One feels the spirit of Christmas and wonders if animals really do talk on Christmas Eve at midnight and if so, what do they say?

Farmer girl doesn't wonder; she feels her cows really do talk to her all through the year. What would Butternut say if she saw someone nestling in the straw of the cowstable, ready to eavesdrop?

Likely she would say "Go on back to the house where its warm, you silly goose!" Butternut is a very silly cow, always expecting other cows to butt her away from the hay rack, which they always do, of course, since Butternut expects it, but.... just because Butternut is silly doesn't mean she cannot spot silliness in others.

The farmhouse is in a flurry of preparation, for this is Christmas Eve! Candles will be lit as dusk falls, the table set, and a simple supper of sausage sandwiches, cheese curds and crackers, cookies and chocolate (plus everything else that anyone can think of) placed on the table. Feasts and celebrations have been an expression of great joy since the beginning of time, and great joy is what we feel as we remember the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ many years ago in a stable.

To all who read, we wish you a very happy Christmas!
